Joseph Hepworth (1834–1911) was the clothing manufacturer who founded Joseph Hepworth & Son, a company which grew to become the United Kingdom's largest clothing manufacturer and which is now known as Next plc. Career. Born at Lindley in Huddersfield, Joseph Hepworth left school at ten to join George Walker's Mill in Leeds in 1844.
Joseph Hepworth was a self-made man. Born in Lindley, near Huddersfield, in 1834, he started work when he was only ten years old as a mill boy, working ‘half-time’: six and a half hours a day, six days a week, for a wage of 1s 6d a week (15 pence).
Hepworth. The company was founded by Joseph Hepworth in Leeds in 1864 as a tailor under the name of Joseph Hepworth & Son. Initially Hepworth was in partnership with James Rhodes, but the partnership was dissolved in 1872. On his own, Hepworth expanded the company rapidly, becoming a pioneer of the development of chain stores in Britain.

Starting life as a factory lad, he later went on to become Mayor of Leeds and run dozens of retail stores, before the entire operation was taken over by Next PLC.

15 de ene. de 2017 · Hepworth’s was founded by Joseph Hepworth (1834-1911), the son of a ‘cloth dresser’ from Lindley near Huddersfield. Joseph followed in his father’s footsteps while he was still a schoolboy, becoming a part-time woollen cloth dresser at a local mill.
J Hepworth & Son, Gentleman’s Tailors is established in Leeds, England. 1981. Hepworth buys the chain of Kendalls rainwear shops to develop a womenswear group of stores called NEXT. 1982. The first NEXT womenswear store opens on 12th February. There are 70 NEXT stores around the UK by the end of July. 1984. NEXT for Men launches in August.
