Julio González nació en Barcelona en 1876 en el seno de una familia de orfebres. En 1899 se trasladó a París, donde se instalaría de forma definitiva y comenzaría a simultanear su trabajo como pintor con el de orfebre. En 1910 realizó sus primeras máscaras de metal repujado bajo una clara influencia del arte primitivo.
