Eventually I saw the paperback of Declare and decided to give Powers another shot. The Kim Philby/Cold War storyline appealed to me (I already knew a lot more of that back story than I had known about, say, the comings and goings of the Romantic poets), and I was looking forward to seeing how it looked through Powers' imagination.
