Deidra Roper with fellow Salt-N-Pepa members Cheryl James and Sandra Denton.
Before starting work on a full-length album, Azor recruited DJ Latoya Hanson (called Spinderella) into Salt-N-Pepa. The ladies worked on the album and in December 1986 the trio's debut album Hot, Cool & Vicious was released, produced by Azor, Salt's boyfriend at the time and the group's manager.

Shortly after, she was replaced by teenager Deidra "Dee-Dee" Roper (talk-show host Wendy Williams, then an unknown, also auditioned), who kept Hanson's nickname.

The trio landed a recording contract with Next Plateau Records, and their first studio album, Hot, Cool & Vicious was released in December 1986.
