Lev Ivánovich Yashin nació en Moscú un 22 de octubre de 1929. Desde muy joven comenzó a trabajar y ayudaba a su padre como mecánico para una fábrica de aviones. En su tiempo libre Yashin jugaba como potero de hockey sobre hielo, aunque el destino quiso que cambiase de deporte.
