Lucy Stone fought for women’s rights almost a century before the 19th Amendment passed. She was born in 1818 in West Brookfield, Massachusetts. She graduated from Oberlin College in 1847, the first Massachusetts woman to earn a bachelor’s degree. After graduation, she became a speaker for the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society.
Lucy Stone was a famous abolitionist, suffrage activist, writer, and organizer. From 1843 to 1847, Stone attended Ohio’s Oberlin College, the first US college to admit both men and women. Two of Stone’s letters, as well as one article she wrote, are preserved in the Oberlin College Archives.
