MacMurray College was accredited from 1909 through 2014 by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, initially as the Illinois Women's College to 1930, and then as MacMurray. After the North Central Association dissolved in 2014, MacMurray's institutional accreditation was through the Higher Learning Commission .
MacMurray College, founded in 1846, was an independent, four-year college with a strong liberal arts tradition that was closed by its Board of Trustees after the 2020 spring semester. Its 60-acre campus was located in the city of Jacksonville, about 30 miles west of Springfield.

Why is MacMurray College closing? MacMurray College had no viable financial path forward in the wake of declining enrollments, rising competitive costs, and an insufficient endowment. Those forces are putting increasing financial pressure on all private, small liberal arts colleges.
