She had an opulent timbre and wide range. She performed key works from both the Italian and German operatic repertoires in Europe and the United States.

In 1904 she joined the Munich Court Opera, remaining there until 1911. During this time she not only made guest appearances at Vienna, Hamburg, Stuttgart, and elsewhere, but also began to study dramatic soprano roles, smartly trying them out in the smaller European houses.

Possessed of a stupendous contralto voice, Margaret Matzenauer was born in Temeszvar, Hungary, in 1881, and she made her opera debut as Puck in Weber's Oberon at the Strasbourg Stadttheater in 1901. For seven years, from 1904 to 1911, she was featured in Wagnerian soprano roles with the Hofoper in Munich.
Sung in German, the opera featured Jeritza in the title role and Margarete Matzenauer as Kostelnicka, under the baton of Artur Bodanzky. Less traditional, both musically and dramatically, than The Bartered Bride, Jenůfa was not well received on its first New York hearing.
