In 1940, after the death of the Parmelees, Ambassador Joseph E. Davies purchased the Causeway Estate as a residence for himself and his wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post. Davies, a lawyer and diplomat, had served as the first Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission and in the 1930s as U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union.
