Mark Laff (born Mark Red Laffoley; 19 May 1958) is an English retired [1] drummer who was a member of several rock bands, including Generation X. [2] Early life and career. Mark Red Laffoley was born on 19 May 1958 at Barnet General Hospital, at Chipping Barnet in the County of Hertfordshire.
He was replaced on drums by the 18 year old Mark Laff from North Finchley, recruited from Subway Sect after an extensive audition process for the vacancy organized by Idol and James in May 1977.
Career. The band was formed in London in 1983 by Gary Twinn, former singer/frontman of the Australian band Supernaut; the drummer Mark Laff, recently from the band Empire, and the former Puncture bass player Steve Counsel. Shortly after its commencement it recruited the lead guitarist Ian McKean.

Before Billy Idol left Gen X Derwood and drummer Mark Laff had already quit Generation X, dissatisfied with the third album demos to form the cult band Empire along with bassist Simon Bernal. At the age of 21, Derwood was writing and singing and playing guitar.
