Arden Coat of Arms. Mary Shakespeare (née Arden; c. 1537 — September 1608) was the mother of William Shakespeare. Biography. Mary was born about 1536 in Wilmcote, the daughter of Robert Arden, a gentleman farmer and junior descendant of the Arden family, who were prominent in Warwickshire.
Mary Arden was the youngest daughter of a wealthy farmer and the wife of John Shakespeare, a businessman in Stratford. She had eight children, including William, and may have lived with him at New Place in later life.
Mary Arden married John Shakespeare in 1557, when she was 20 years old and John was 26. She may have been thought to have married ‘beneath’ herself – a daughter of the landed class marrying the son of a tenant farmer – but we do not know anything about her family’s attitude to her marriage.

Mary Howarth Arden, Baroness Mance, DBE, PC (born 23 January 1947), known professionally as Lady Arden of Heswall, is a former Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. Before that, she was a judge of the Court of Appeal of England and Wales.
