"Narcissus and Goldmund "is the story of a passionate yet uneasy friendship between two men of opposite character. Narcissus, an ascetic instructor at a cloister school, has devoted himself solely to scholarly and spiritual pursuits. One of his students is the sensual, restless Goldmund, who is immediately drawn to his teacher's fierce intellect and sense of discipline.
The young Goldmund is sent by his father to study in the monastery Mariabronn and meets there on the religious monastic student Narcissus. Narcissus has dedicated himself to the ascetic and austere life in the monastery with heart and soul and Goldmund first tries to imitate him.
1. The introduction does a great job of bringing the cloister to life, of making it and the chestnut tree seem ageless. A constant among the cycles of changing faces and seasons. The book isn't shy about assigning Narcissus special status, "a seemingly chosen" intellectual with a similar insight into the souls of others that Demian possessed.
