The parish of St. Michael is one of eleven parishes of Barbados. It has a land area of 39 km 2 (15 sq mi) and is found at the southwest portion of the island. Saint Michael has survived by name as one of the original six parishes created in 1629 by Governor Sir William Tufton.

The first church of St. Michael a wooden building, was built c. 1628 – 1630 on the site now occupied by the St. Mary’s Church in central Bridgetown. It had a maximum seating capacity for 100 worshipers. A new St. Michael Church was erected at this present site, a gift from Colonel Wil- liam Sharpe. It was a stone building with seating for 3000.
