Peter Michael Falk wurde, weil er in einem von italienischen Einwanderern geprägten Viertel in New York City aufwuchs, immer wieder fälschlicherweise als Amerikaner italienischer Herkunft angesehen. Tatsächlich stammte seine Mutter Madeline Hochhauser aus Russland und sein Vater Michael Falk aus Polen. Seine Eltern betrieben ein Bekleidungsgeschäft.
