Shelby Foote was an American writer, historian and journalist who wrote The Civil War: A Narrative, a three-volume history of the American Civil War. He was born in Greenville, Mississippi, in 1916 and died in Memphis, Tennessee, in 2005. He was influenced by his father's Confederate ancestry, his fraternal relationship with Walker Percy, and his experience of the Civil Rights Movement.
