He studied at Leipzig Conservatoire under Reinecke, Salomon Jadassohn , Homeyer, etc., served for a time as professor at Magdeburg Conservatoire, and was appointed in 1919 to Leipzig Conservatoire, where he taught pianoforte, theory and composition.
