14 de jul. de 2021 · Known then as Stade Municipal, the stadium was renamed in honour of Josy Barthel in 1993 who remains currently the only athlete from Luxembourg to have won a gold Medal at the Olympic games. Josy Barthel won the 1500m gold at the 1952 Olympics which was held at Helsinki’s Olympiastadion in Finland.

The Stade Josy Barthel is the current national stadium of Luxembourg, hosting the country’s national football and rugby union teams. Originally known as the Stade Municipal when it opened in 1931, the stadium was completely rebuilt in 1990 and was renamed after Joseph (“Josy”) Barthel in 1993 – Luxembourg’s only Olympic gold medal winner.
