The Mar-Keys, formed in 1958, were an American studio session band for Stax Records, in Memphis, Tennessee, in the 1960s. As the first house band for the label, their backing music formed the foundation for the early 1960s Stax sound.
The Mar-Keys (originally named The Royal Spades) were the backing band on many early Stax releases but also recorded singles of their own. In 1962 the rhythm section more or less evolved into Booker T & The MG's and later the horn section into The Memphis Horns.

Though many regard Booker T. & The M.G’.s as the seminal backing ensemble tasked with providing the instrumental might that established Stax’s soul sound, the group doesn’t have the distinction as the label’s very first in-house band. Instead, that distinction belongs to a looser collective of players billed as The Mar-Keys.
