On February 8, 2024, NASA’s PACE (Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem) satellite roared into space aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Less than two months later, NASA engineer Joseph Knuble compiled a gallery of 36 images from the satellite’s primary sensor. Among his favorites is this image of the Gulf of Oman.

To the casual observer, these swirling maelstroms might appear to be agents of chaos, upending the delicate stratification of the deep. But those who endeavor to truly understand the hidden clockwork of the ocean know better.

It is created by the flow of water swirling in the opposite direction from the main current of the river. Eddies can vary in size and can be relatively calm or turbulent, depending on various factors.

A seal popped its head up in the swirling eddies produced by the vessel’s reverberating hull, whilst birds flew above and along the deck. Bobbing white rocks visible in the clear waters were translucently jellyfish upon closer inspection.
