The Unknown Soldier (Tuntematon sotilas) is author Väinö Linna’s first major novel and his other major work besides Under the North Star. Published in 1954, it is a story about the Continuation War between Finland and the Soviet Union as told from the viewpoint of ordinary Finnish soldiers.
Not only is it a best-selling novel, it has been made into a film, a stage play and an opera. The reasons are, at least in part, the importance of the war in Finland’s history. It started with the so-called Winter War in 1939, when the Soviet Union invaded Finland, with the aim of establishing a puppet government in Helsinki.
