Earlier Life. Thomas was educated at home before entering Trinity College, Cambridge in 1558.

Both of William’s surviving sons were to follow in their father’s footsteps at Court and were enobled in 1605 under James I; Thomas created 1 st Earl of Exeter and Robert, 1 st Earl of Salisbury. Burghley became the principal residence of the Exeter Cecils and still is today. Burghley’s elder son, Thomas became Earl of Exeter in 1605.
