Walter Thomas Varney (December 26, 1888 – January 25, 1967) was an American aviation pioneer who founded forerunners of two major U.S. airlines, United Airlines and Continental Airlines, which combined under United Continental Holdings long after his death.
United was formed by the amalgamation of several airlines in the late 1920s, the oldest of these being Varney Air Lines, created in 1926 by Walter Varney who later co-founded the predecessor to Continental Airlines. In 1997, United became one of the five founding airlines of Star Alliance, of which it remains a member today.
United Airlines was founded by Walter T. Varney in 1926 as Varney Airlines, one of the first two airlines created by him. The airline's first flight was piloted by Leon Cuddeback on April 6, 1926. It has a history of firsts in aviation, such as the first flight kitchen, the first male flight attendants, and the first to use computers and biofuel.
