The school was established in 1957 as a coeducational school, changing to girls only in 1962 when Westlake Boys High School opened.

Westlake Girls’ High School, situated on Auckland’s North Shore, is a large, multicultural, secondary school catering for girls from Year 9 to 13. Six percent of the school roll identify as Māori and most have northern iwi affiliations. Through its vision the school aspires to be a leading educator of young women.
