Whitehill Secondary School on Whitehill Street in Dennistoun in the early 1970s. Jack House, Alistair Gray, Adam McNaughton, Ricki Fulton and Dorothy Paul are some of the famous Glaswegians who attended the school. In 1883 the Glasgow School Board acquired Dennistoun Academy, the private school that had been erected earlier on the site.

After being born in Riddrie during the 1930s and moving down to Yorkshire during the Second World War, the Scottish author and artist Alasdair Gray attended Whitehill Secondary School. He was made editor of the school magazine and also won prizes for Art and English with him going on to study at the Glasgow School of Art.
But one of the awards he did proudly accept was his Lifetime Achievement Award from his old secondary school in Dennistoun, Whitehill, where he was a student from 1945-1951. In 2017 he was invited to attend the celebratory dinner and had a wonderful evening talking with staff and students.
