William Fox was a film mogul who started his own production company in 1913 and became a rival of Thomas Edison and Louis B. Mayer. He pioneered the widescreen film, the sound-on-film process, and the 1000-house Fox theatre chain. He was also involved in a legal battle with Edison and a federal anti-trust investigation. He died in 1952 after serving a year in prison.
