His career included periods playing for and later managing the England national team and being a UEFA Cup -winning manager at Ipswich Town.
In his first match as Newcastle manager, the club thrashed Sheffield Wednesday 8–0, and while they spent the rest of the season in mid-table, finishing eleventh, Robson had done his job which was to keep Newcastle in the Premier League.
