Cheyenne Autumnis based on a true story from 1878 in which more than three hundred Northern Cheyenne escape from the Cheyenne and Arapaho Agency at Fort Reno, Oklahoma, to return to their home in the Yellowstone area. They are led by Chiefs Dull Knife and Little Wolf and guided by an elderly woman.
Ford chose as the basis for his story, Cheyenne Autumn, a novel by Mari Sandoz. The plot follows a small band of Cheyenne Indians attempting to escape their infertile Oklahoma reservation to their own lush Wyoming homeland, from which they were transported after having surrendered to the U.S. government in 1877.
