Elizabeth Capel (née Morrison) was the heir of Sir Charles Morrison of Cassiobury, Hertfordshire. She married Arthur Capel in 1627, and when he inherited his grandfather's estates in 1632, the couple became one of the wealthiest in England.

An unpublished head and shoulders portrait of Elizabeth Capel, c.1658 (Private Collection, Edinburgh) which appears to relate to the double portrait in the Metropolitan Museum of Art is an exceptionally direct likeness and says much about Lely’s friendship with the sitter.
His wife, Lady Elizabeth Capel, became the Dowager Countess of Essex when her husband died in 1693 (by suicide or murder) in the Tower of London whilst awaiting his trial.
