This first theory is that the Dark World in Deltarune is an abandoned Dungeons and Dragons game. The evidence of this becomes clearer as facts are put together. Lightners used to come to the Dark World, but left. This is much like turning off a game, the screen turning black, and expecting it to all be there next time you open it up.
I've been thinking about how Gerson in Deltarune seems to have some parallels with Gaster. He doesn't appear in person, but is constantly referenced. He is described as "brilliant" before dying and being replaced by Alphys. In Deltarune, this information comes from Alvin; in Undertale, from the Gaster followers.
Gaster is trying to banish the Angel's Heaven; Gerson's son is the priest of a church that worships the Angel. Gerson was the first character ever to mention the Delta Rune legend in Undertale; Gaster was the next character to mention it, reading the legend verbatim in the pre-Chapter 1 Deltarune site. Gerson is an anagram of Goners.
