My dad was in a motorcycle accident in his early 20's, and irreparably severed a nerve in his nose that allows your sense of smell to function. In the 30+ years since he's said that he's also slowly lost almost all sense of taste as well because of it. My dad got a similar consequence in a fall on his work site.
