John Cardon Debney (born August 18, 1956) is an American composer, conductor and musician. He received an Academy Award nomination for the music for Mel Gibson 's The Passion of the Christ (2004). He is also known for writing the music for Cutthroat Island (1995).

As a child, he was exposed to music from an early age, with his father being a producer and composer of radio and television jingles. Debney began playing instruments at a young age, starting with the piano and later adding the guitar and drums to his repertoire.
