I'm in Kagoshima at the moment. I did a 5 day trip to Yakushima which was amazing. If you don't want to travel that far I would definitely recommend the Ibusuki sand onsen and the hike on the Kaimondake volcano is one of the best I did in the whole of Japan (even on par with Yakushima which is thought to be the best nature of the whole of Japan).

For the unfamiliar, Kagoshima is located on the southern tip of Kyushu, and the main attraction is the big, active volcano (Sakurajima) just outside of town. It's really pretty and dominates the coastal view in a really cool way.
Our itinerary for the moment includes Sakurajima, hiking Kaimondake, sightseeing around the Satsuma peninsula, maybe a sand bath in Ibusuki. Pretty standard stuff since I don’t know the area. Has anyone here visited Kagoshima? What did you do, and would you recommend it?
