Vance was married four times; her first three marriages ended in divorce. She was married to her third husband, actor Philip Ober, for 18 years. Ober was rumored to have abused Vance because he was envious of her successful career. On January 16, 1961, Vance married literary agent, editor, and publisher John Dodds (1922-1986).
According to him, Vance had spent so many years repressed by him, it finally took a visible toll. “He made her afraid of men ,” he claimed. Vance was four times married — to Joseph Shearer Danneck, George Koch, Philip Ober, and John Dodds.

On August 12, 1941, Ober married actress Vivian Vance. They divorced in 1959. Ober's third marriage was to Jane Westover; they were married from 1961 until Ober's death in 1982.
