Named after the verse in the prophet Isaiah, “The first one to Zion (Rishon LeZion), behold, behold them, and for Jerusalem I will give a herald (41:27),” the town signifies Israel’s redemption and the return of the Jewish People to their homeland.
By the mid-1990s, the population of Rishon le-Zion was approximately 154,300 and in 2021 it was approximately 260,000, making it the fourth largest city in Israel, with its land area now increased to 23 sq. mi. (60 sq. km.) as the city expanded to the west and many business areas spread throughout.
