The purpose is to demonstrate how the translation occasionally ‘errs’ in the first-order semiosis, that is, rendering the literal meanings, and how it manages to reproduce the symbolic articulation and theme in the second-order semiosis, and achieves the status of verbal art in a new language.

In 1963, Halliday assumed Directorship of the Communications Research Centre at University College London and took on headship of the Department of General Linguistics at University College London in 1965.
