San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) was a private college of contemporary art in San Francisco, California. Founded in 1871, SFAI was one of the oldest art schools in the United States and the oldest west of the Mississippi River. Approximately 220 undergraduates and 112 graduate students were enrolled in 2021.
In 1961, the California School of Fine Arts was renamed the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI). This renaming reflected a merging of the San Francisco Art Association with the school it had previously overseen. In time, the SFAA faded out of existence, fully absorbed into SFAI.

The school became known as the California School of Fine Arts in 1916, moved to the Chestnut Street location in 1926, and was renamed the San Francisco Art Institute in 1961.
