At the age of 25, he began acting, starring in numerous European films and television series, including Westler in 1985. Then in 1991, Kretschmann was awarded the Max Ophüls Prize for best young actor for his role in Der Mitwisser. He went on to star in his first full-length feature, the 1993 film Stalingrad.
Thomas Kretschmann was born in East Germany. Before becoming an actor, he was a swimmer. He has acted in several popular American movies, such as Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004), The Pianist (2002), U-571 (2000), In Enemy Hands (2004), etc. He has three children, Nicolas, Stella and Sascha with his ex-girlfriend Lena.
Thomas Kretschmann gehörte 2003 zu den Gründungsmitgliedern der Deutschen Filmakademie. Privates. Kretschmann war zwölf Jahre lang mit Lena Roklin liiert und hat mit ihr drei Kinder (* 1998, * 1999 und * 2002). Ende März 2009 gaben beide die Trennung bekannt.
