After 137 years, an era has come to an end. Wentworth Military Academy was started in the river town of Lexington, MO in 1880. Steeped in history of river traffic along the Missouri River Bluffs. Rich in Civil War history, the brainchild of Stephen G. Wentworth, Wentworth, a school for young men, came to be.
Wentworth Military Academy and College. Wentworth Military Academy and College was a private two-year military college and high school in Lexington, Missouri, one of six military junior colleges in the United States. The institution was founded in 1880 and closed in 2017.
Wentworth Military Academy and College was a private four-year college preparatory high school and military junior college. It was located in Lexington, Missouri, part of the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area. Wentworth was the oldest military academy west of the Mississippi River, and the campus is on the National Register of Historic Places.
I photographed on the campus in 2019. Internet Archive has most of the Wentworth catalogs and yearbooks online. The 1880 National Register application has a history of the campus. The grounds of the academy were sold at auction after its closure. However, downtown Lexington now has a museum dedicated to the academy’s history. The Wentworth Military Academy Museum on Main Street proudly displays exhibits from the college. This includes the stained-glass windows once featured in its chapel.
