They were a valued artifact amongst pre-Columbian cultures in the Americas for their large sizes and serrated blades, from which they were modified into projectile points, knives, jewelry, and funeral accessories. At least some, such as the Panamanian Sitio Conte societies, seemed to have used them primarily for ceremonial purposes.
Years ago, just before he passed away, Red Skelton gave a speech. I don't recall if it were a retirement speech or just a good bye speech knowing his final horizon was near. He wasn't being humorous or trying to be funny. It was a very heartfelt and philosophical speech. It was the best speech I had ever heard.
