In the anime, his status is known, and the ending is left open, as proven by MAPPA. However, according to the source material, it is assumed that he has indeed died.
In the manga, Ash was confirmed to be deceased through the Garden of Light side story but in the anime Ash's status still being unknown whereas he is still alive or dead, makes it an open ending.
In the manga's true ending, as found to be confirming Ash's death in a subsequent epilogue (Garden of Light), is where we come to see how Eiji and Sing handle the death of Ash Lynx years later, and what their individual grief means to them, and how Yoshida felt that the conclusion of BF was always meant to be.
